A Burial at Ornans
This painting depicts the funeral of a relative held in Ornans, a small town in France, Courbet's hometown. The work, which portrays an ordinary scene, the funeral of an unknown person, as if it were a momentous event, drew criticism from critics. At the time, such large canvases were only permitted for religious or historical paintings.

Who is Courbet?
Gustave Courbet
A painter who established Realism in 19th-century France. True to his statement, “I have never seen an angel, so I do not paint them,” he rejected mythology and idealized beauty, instead depicting ordinary people and laborers as they were. However, this stance was seen as a challenge to the art world of the time and drew fierce criticism. His exhibition, which he organized himself in protest after being rejected from the World’s Fair, is considered the first solo exhibition in art history. Portraits from his youth show him to have been quite a handsome man, but he appears to have gained a considerable amount of weight as he grew older.
