Crack is Wack
Literally translated, "Cocaine is lame." This mural was created to protest the widespread use of cocaine and its delayed regulation. Because it was initially painted without permission, Haring was arrested for vandalism, but due to public outcry, his sentence was reduced and he was later officially commissioned by the Parks Department. It underwent extensive restoration in 2012.
Cocaine was really out of control back then. Even my assistant became addicted—I just couldn’t sit still and do nothing.

Keith Haring
A leading figure of pop art in 1980s New York, he began his career with subway graffiti and quickly gained popularity with his bold lines and bouncy characters.
