Impression, Sunrise

Impression, Sunrise image

This masterpiece by Monet is said to be the origin of the name "Impressionism." It depicts a view of the port of Le Havre in northwestern France, painted with rough brushstrokes, and is famously criticized as being "better than half-finished wallpaper." It was not well-received for a while after its release, and it wasn't considered a masterpiece until some time after Impressionism was recognized by the public.

Back when I painted this, landscapes weren’t popular at all. If you didn’t include people, they’d just call you a bad painter.

Who is Monet?

Claude Monet

Monet portrait illustration

A representative painter of Impressionism and, by extension, of modern French art, Monet focused on capturing the changing light and atmosphere, and the shimmering of the water's surface, creating beautiful works such as "Impression, Sunrise" and "Water Lilies." His style, which seems to be enveloped in gentle light, is widely loved, but his life was far from smooth sailing. He was a painter who persevered through hardship, continuing to explore modern art. In Giverny, France, Monet's final home and gardens remain, and visitors can see the water lilies that he loved.
